roxys friday 19th march 2010

So i found myself at Roxys in Melville simply cos a couple of people told me what i wrote about fameboy hydro was a tad bit too honest so i was kind enough to go watch hm perform live iv always said if you cant pull of a live performance ur not a real artist whats the point of recording dope tracks then killing them when you perform??
anyway the gig had a coupla hiphop artists performing a YBR event Which featured JR, Mr Selwyn( yeah hez still alive or they wouldn't ask him to perform right?)anyway Fameboy hydro, Killa cheeks,Slick-T,Razz.So Jr And Mr Selwyn didn't perform. A word to Selwyn maybe u should go back to selling insurance or whatever u were doing after ur music career was short lived the new cats r too fresh for u to compete with. So i sat there patiently waiting for all these guys to perform and wow i must say i was impressed by the guys who performed first Killa cheeks and slick T funny enough these guys were supposed to perform with Hydro but wait for it Mr Fameboy Hydro didn't even pitch i guess he believes he is too celeb for his fellow artists but negro please ur a flippin one hit one wonder then u pull bullshit like that oh wait my bad ur on the way to being a one hit wonder i hate new cats who have one track that everyone likes who think they r now too great for small venue performances i personally take back everything i said about Hydro before I no longer believe you will make it anywhere in life as an artist with that kinda attitude. But i must say Killa cheeks and Slick T u guys killed your Performance it was too fresh "Hold up" is a killer killer track u boys are awesome i c a bright future for you guys if your ditch your nonsensical buddy hydro and do well for yourselves cos heres the difference between "do Ur Thang" and "Hold UP" hold up has a pop feel with crazy lyrical content that's not candy coated and mindless but strong content whoa im too impressed guys Killa Cheeks cant wait to listen to Ur mix tape n slick T pls show me what u got cos ur on point man as for the Razz guy what were u trying babe? ja ne being an artist wasn't meant for all of us clearly....

H-Da 8th Letter

I was introduced to a site called reverbnation lotsa guys who are tryna get their stuff out there put their mix tapes/demos etc on there so went through it and found a guy called H-Da 8th Letter seems good enough to write about well let me not say good enough I'll try not get into the name iv decided to keep my opinions about names to myself cos clearly i just have real issues that should be dealt with accordingly.H-Da 8th Letter was born in Kinshasa, DRC in 1988. He left when he was 5yrs old to South Africa because of the on going war, so by birth he already had things to write about. Now, raised in South Africa he learnt the languages to express his emotions in every way possible through music. Now living in New York City he is devoted to take over the music industry with is lyrical ability and charisma to the industry and pays homage to the ones that came before him.Listening to the 5 songs he had on the site i was purely blown away by this guys lyrical content very strong stuff, checked the music video for lets get it on out too doesn't appeal to me think more could have been done with it and the song, and im not too crazy bout the beats on the tracks either kinda brings him down a little. but even though he is lyrically strong still unsure if its something I'm willing to sit and listen to over and over again, purely because as an artist u gotta find the balance between having strong lyrical content yet appealing to the market cos at the end of the day like my friend always says "u gotta put bread on the table man" and honestly i don't think he is versatile enough to break into the market as a strong commercial artist he has potential to though don't get me wrong. I'm not saying mindless candy coated hip hop is the way forward but u still gotta appeal to a number of people, think as an underground artist he serves that platform well,if its the kinda market he's going for and if that's the market that he wants to appeal to, he should rethink it cos bread is costly and don't come cheap and besides you cant live your whole life making demos and mix tapes if you want that its time you reconsidered being a hip hop artist and look for a career.

chaos

Heard a single from a duo\group called chaos "Vele" started falling in love with sa hiphop all over again, the sounds been used before but sounds good very similar to the likes of morafe, but sounding very fresh people need to seriously stop giving me singles think a full on mix tape works cos then i can get an overall feel of your sound. these boys from pimville and white city respectively have done a really good job the songs works as a party starter but gets a lil monotonous after a while. So yes it gets to me after a while but no hating just truth being told. With the help of talented producers like Thaso (Impact Sounds), Lection (Rare Breed), Jamela (999), and CHAOS themselves, the charismatic group has managed to successfully put themselves on the map by working with producer who are well known in the south african industry if the whole album or mixtape sounds as good as "vele" these guys will be well accepted in the industry im loving that u guys sound so flippn proudly south african lyrical content works with the song yet still as strong elements but guys once again the name chaos maybe i just have issues with names and need serious help cant wait to hear your full album/mix tape hope u don't disappoint lets keep sa hip hop alive

Fameboy hydro

A friend of mine introduced me to this artist "Fameboy Hydro" i swear had anyone else told me to listen to some guy who gives himself a name that means nothing and appeals to teen boppers who love candy coated hip hop, then no i probably wouldn't buy your cd or even bother copying your mix tape. seriously though how hard can it be to give yourself a decent name? i have heard worse but im gonna try not judge an artist by his name so listened to his mix tape welcome to wattville vol.1 and...........well not too much to write about a couple of songs stand out funny enough his outro sounds better than most songs.
"Hydro is a 21 year old lyricist determined to prove his music is ready and worthy of international recognition. Being the grandson of South African born and exiled jazz legend, Blues Nkata.one cannot help but ask how much of his grandfathers music he takes from him.You hear traces of jazz in Hydro’s music.”(Alberton Record, November 25, 2009) he is clearly making waves in his community but good enough to make waves in the music industry? the guy seems to not know what he would like to sound like pretty much tryna sound hardcore yes your from wattville but that shouldn't be what makes you a good artist but hey man if you wanna ride on the fact that your from the hood so that makes your shit gangster rap then "do your thang" but im not hating the mixtape has a couple of songs that sound good, extraordinary beats but lyrically not strong so if he is tryna appeal to the we listen to mindless hip hop crowd then he has got that on point.
On that mindless hip hop note he has a song called "Do ur thang" which is receiving a lot of airplay seems people like listening to to a song simply cos its got a good beat and catchy lines, has an over the top pseudo feel but the song obviously serves the market well.
I honestly think he has great potential and could seriously blow up in this industry.Must admit nice video too obviously the last few seconds being excluded cos it confuses me makes me think of him as a candy coated rapper very similar to the likes of soulja boy nothing to be proud about there... I get that we are influenced by American rap but lets not try sound just like them, its ok to be proudly south African but believe you'll make it really big looking forward to listening to the hydro/killa cheeks mix tape :-)
